How To Play

First time LARPER? Experienced? Feeling a little curious either way? Don’t worry, we’re here to explain the basics of how our interactive gaming system works.

Live action roleplay (LARP) is a form of improvisational roleplaying where participants portray characters in a fictional setting, acting out their actions and stories in real-time. LARPS can vary from historical reenactments to narrative sci-fi and fantasy campaigns with foam shield and sorcery, to masquerade balls where strangers can socialize as their characters.

Ebony & Ivory focuses the most on storytelling. We at Phoenix Rising have created our own imaginary world, filled with rich lore of vampire culture throughout multiple decades - including the Victorian age, the Roaring 20s, and 8-Bit 80’s. We celebrate vampires across time and place to appeal to fandoms across books, movies, shows, and history. Each event we host introduces players to a multitude of characters and themed scenarios, some with a social setting and others with a gaming experience.

But how to play, you ask? First, check out our lore on the page below where you’ll find information about our homebrewed clan system. Each clan is represented by a Pillar, who is an actor from a specific clan that acts as the leader and liaison of that clan, and a member of Phoenix Rising’s cast. Enjoy some research, select which clan you’d like your personal character to hail from, and begin your journey.

Is your character a bootlegging criminal from the Industrialists? Or an awkward Newjinn who accidentally makes it storm when they’re angry? Do they seek out buried treasure like a Gaian?

Find your vibe and create your character’s past, drive, and personality traits. Develop these personalities as you encounter other vampires, Pillars, and humans in each of our events.

The Great Clans

The Forerunners

Ancient. Regal. Immortal.

Forerunners are sophisticated bureaucrats with sagely wisdom and opulent lifestyles granted by their excessively long lives. But don’t be fooled by their decadence - they brought many vampires into this world and it’s not a hard feat to remove them. A single glance from a Forerunner can captivate any soul who stares a second too long. Forerunners are gifted with charisma, knowledge, and reputation. They have written laws into stone, honed their bloodlust, and survived tooth and nail during the many crises of the world for millennia.

Character Archetype Suggestions - Council leaders, con artists, thieves, art collectors, savants, business owners, politicians, diplomats

Power Specialties - High charisma and persuasion, mind control mastery

The Industrialists

Rebels. Tinkerers. Bootleggers.

Industrialists are vampires who rose to power under the Industrial Revolution’s sway; and as the world began to experiment, so did they. These vampires benefited from the illegal distribution of alcohol alongside humans, for they had their own alchemical concoctions - blood infused potions that would create a variety of effects for the drinker. These rebel souls were at the heart of every Speakeasy, whether on the dance floor or back in the breweries. Their inventions would become infamous, their elixirs would become staples, and their legacy would be just as immortal.

Character Archetype Suggestions - Alchemists, bootleggers, runners/traders, Artificers, bartenders, chefs, doctors, inventors, scientists, activists, performers/bards

Power Specialties - Blood magic

The Gaians

Connected. Patient. Resurrectionists.

Earth-bound spirits are the hosts of Gaians, who attune to the natural energies of the world and mysticism within it. Gaians are mysterious, aloof, and curious - always seeking out opportunities to treasures buried in history and resurrect ancient pastimes. Their amity and lack of bloodlust sets them apart from their other vampire brethren, as well as their connection to the spirit realm. Instead, they sate their hunger by feeding on psychic energy.

Character Archetype Suggestions - Archaeologists, treasure hunters, anthropologists, historians, animators, curse workers, Psychics/Mediums, Scientists, Tribal leaders, peacemakers, diplomats, liaisons, spirit walkers, necromancers, veterinarians, herbal doctors, astronomers, geologists, woodworkers, gardeners

Power Specialties - Psychic vampirism, earthly sense

The Umbran

Shadows. Steel. Guardians.

The Umbran are a force to be reckoned with - shadowy assassins deemed worthy to protect vampire kind. These vigilantes prowl the dark streets, guarding secrets from mankind by eliminating threats. Umbran are renowned for their strength, speed, and stamina as well as their iron fists. They hunt in darkness and answer to the vampire clan calls, especially those dictated by the Queen. The Umbran are quiet tacticians trained to look for danger and boogeymen to the humans who see their retreating shadows.

Character Archetypes Suggestions - Hackers, bodyguards, military, police, agents, assassins, politicians, spies, journalists

Power Specialties - Shadowed presence, blood tracking

The Newjinn

Bold. Brave. Dangerous.

The Newjinn life is one of eternal new life. Parties, fashion, drama, and magic. The Newjinn clan hail from the 1980’s and 1990’s, giving them a new spice of life in the form of wild magic. These vampires possess chaotic powers the other clans do not - and aren’t often in control of these abilities, making them deadly with a side of hazardous. They are reckless party mongers ready to move away from Victorian politics, ancient policies, and old ways of thinking. Newjinn are frequently at odds with the other clans, preferring to mingle with humans openly.

The Daywalkers

Sunshiners. Hybrids. Tricksters.

Brand new to the vampire legacy, the Daywalkers are the first of their kind - half human, half vampire, and all trouble. They are the only clan able to withstand sunlight and also immune to mind control. These special abilities make them useful to the clans to be able to do and see what they cannot during the diurnal hours. Daywalkers are spunky, fierce individuals who are still learning to harness their hunger and fit in with their new found family.
